VALENTIN HIRSCH

Art, a lifetime point by point Valentin Hirsch (born in 1978 in Eschwege, lives and works in Berlin) developed in the early 2000s his monstrous-graceful ink drawings and etchings and compared his art to that of a tattooist. The actual change from transparent paper to human skin took then place in 2010. The drawing into skin is an irreversible act. The exceptional black tattoos of Valentin Hirsch so deny any form of deception, but their existence is bound to a body and a life. Hirsch takes this ambivalence of the medium in his tattoo designs up: Wildlife and terrifyingly graceful skulls overgrow each other or are opposed against each other. Lines and abstract shapes set sharp limits that neither the existence nor the skin inherent as artistic material. Valentin Hirsch's first monograph shows the transition from drawing to tattoo as mandatory step of his artistic development, which is characterized by coherence and reinvention alike. With a text by Gunter Damisch and an interview of the artist, led by Uta Grosenick.
