my/Berlin - with wit & voi

Today we’re really happy to introduce you to these two lovely ladies. Julia White and Silke Voigtländer, founders of wit & voi will give you some exclusive insights into their personal all-time Berlin favorites.

Under the new brand ‚wit & voi’, the two interior design specialists develop affordable and most importantly gorgeous (!) interior design concepts for people like you and me. After reading through this interview, you should visit their website. It’s definitely worth a visit!

1. When and why did you come to Berlin?

Julia: I first moved to Berlin in 1999 and lived there for 7 years before moving to New York for another 8 years. My husband and I moved back approximately 2 years ago.

Silke: Exactly 4 years ago. I wanted to escape the drabness of my hometown Hannover. In search of inspiration, surprises, more freedom and more living I ended up in here. Another reason must have been my addiction to entertainment, making Berlin my favorite ally…

2. How do you think Berlin is going to change within the next 10 years?

Julia: Coming back to Berlin after 8 years of living in New York was a real surprise, because the city had changed a lot! It’s much tidier, more established. You kind of get the feeling that Berlin really knows what it wants now. It also has become much more international than it used to be. When I went away, almost nobody was speaking English on the streets. Now it’s rather the other way around.
I think Berlin will become even more international and confident, a cheeky but still fancy metropolis. It’ll definitely become more expensive, which kind of fits with the new self-confidence and the style though.

Silke: Everyone wants to spend their wild and most rebellious stage of life in Berlin and then leave for something else. Maybe that’s what’s going to change in the future. Berlin will grow up and be a little bit more proud of what it has to offer. However, I really hope, that it will never loose its very unique style of being imperfect and unorthodox!

3. Your favorite Berlin designer/shop

Julia: Just recently, my friend showed me an amazing shop in ‚Mitte‘ – Amazing Crocodile. Very modern, colorful, exciting and chose to do it without using any fancy Scandinavian design. I really like this store!
And just because I do live Scandinavian Design – the HAY store in ‘Mitte’. The space is so beautiful, it just had to be mentioned! ;)

Silke: For me Bazar Noir is one of the most amazing boutiques for furniture and accessories. Gorgeous presentation and selected, exclusive products of local and international designers.

4. Where do you take your friends & family when they visit?

Julia: In summer, I like to take them to watch the karaoke at ‚Mauerpark‘, afterwards we do a little shopping at the flea market of ‘Arkonaplatz’. We also try to cycle sometimes and go on short bike tours. For example to the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park – it’s so surreal.

Silke: I definitely show them around my personal ‚Schiller-Kiez‘ Favorites, that are located like 150m around my apartment. After a walk around the small, overgrown cemetery just across the street, we’re going to Zio Felix. This small, unpretentious Italian place makes the best pizza in the area. Afterwards, we’re going to Willi Möller’s Holzkohle Bar with a chimney! After a very warm welcome, you can enjoy loads of delicious drinks.

5. Let's talk about food! What's your all-time favorite restaurant or street food place?

Julia: As it’s very close to our place, we sometimes go to ‘The Bird’. Most of the time we go there during the week and we sit at the bar, just because there is no free table left.
Having been in the US for so long, we really miss good Mexican food! That’s the reason why we do go to Santa Maria from time to time. It’s not really what we would call ‘american-mexican standard’ but it’s the best we’ve had in Berlin so far. That’s why we go there anytime we’re getting a case of wanderlust!

Silke: I love great food and I love to cook, so I have quite a few favorite restaurants. It really depends on my mood and the occasion. On very special evenings I like to go to Crackers, former Cookies. I love that they are playing club music and that their huge bar breaks the appearance of a pure restaurant. This interior concept is fantastic and the atmosphere very unique. Go there and try the beef tartar – It’s magnificent!
